Volunteer Teachers and Teaching Assistants

For several years, Borderlands has delivered volunteer-taught English language classes which have been highly popular.

Borderlands has a dedicated team of Volunteer Teachers and Teaching Assistants who have experience of teaching English in an informal context to asylum seekers and refugees. Borderlands has more than 1000 asylum seekers, refugees and other non-EU migrants registered in a database and a good reputation among asylum seekers and refugees in Bristol. Before the coronavirus restrictions came into place, Borderlands taught around 60 individuals per session in four different classes, with two sessions each week.

We have had particular success in attracting pre-entry learners as well as those “new to learning”, teaching them beginner English in a community setting in which they feel comfortable.

Borderlands is a member of the local ESOL & Employability Providers Network, and is on the steering group for the Single Assessment Hub project, led by the Community Learning team in Bristol City Council.

We are looking for organised and reliable Volunteer Teachers. You will;

  • Have experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages

  • Have a willingness to improvise and work flexibly with your plan

  • Be excited by working within a multicultural team

Specific Duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare and deliver engaging classes for Borderlands members

  • Prepare content appropriate to the level they teach, finding and preparing the resources needed, and tasking teaching assistants where available

  • Work with the teaching assistant to ensure that the classes are stimulating, relaxed and participatory for all students

  • Set up or set down classroom as required

  • Where classes are shared between two teachers, the teachers should communicate after each lesson via phone or email regarding their class, new students, progress etc

  • Follow Borderlands policies and procedures when volunteering. E.g. Equal Opportunities and Safeguarding Policies (these will be given to you at induction training and are available on the website).
